HOW TO GET PREPARED TO THE FASHION WEEK
HOW TO GET PREPARED TO THE FASHION WEEK

Suitcase of the editor Ulyana Boyko, the Ukrainian designer Elena Reva and buyer of the Kyiv boutique Chloé Tatyana Ruban

The most interesting and anticipated Fashion Week started in Paris. This year, we decided not only to pull back the curtain on the shows backstage, but also to talk about the life of the fashion influencers. Together with the Have A Rest smart-suitcases brand, we gathered our friends — the chief editor of L'Officiel Ukraine Ulyana Boyko, the Ukrainian designer Elena Reva and the buyer of Kyiv boutique Chloé Tatyana Ruban — and asked them about their preparations to the fashion marathon and must-haves for traveling.

Tell us about your schedule at Fashion Week. How does your day begin and how long does it usually last?

Usually, the first show in Milan and Paris starts at 9:30 in the morning, this is the beginning of the working day. Of course, I do not always visit the first shows, but regardless of the time, my morning begins with breakfast at my laptop and checking the messengers. On trips, I get out of the work schedule and try to catch every opportunity to work quietly. The Fashion Weeks turn the cities into stylish crowds that migrate through the locations. What I do like about the European approach to scheduling, is consistency in movement. Most often, presentation locations are within walking distance from the show locations, and vice versa. This simplifies the logistics greatly. If you follow the schedule and skip nothing.

The concept of dinner does not exist at all; if you are fortunate you can get some snack. I taught myself to find points where I can take healthy snacks and fresh fruits. The last show can start at 8-9 p.m. — accordingly, the final will be about 10. If you want to attend after-parties, organized by the brands, you won’t get to the hotel before 1 at night. Therefore, I am not a frequent visitor to such parties, my priority is to keep my mind fresh in the morning.

What are your must-haves for traveling?

There are several beauty must-haves I always take along. I have to walk a lot, and not always in sneakers, so the Compeed pencil saves me. After its application, none of the shoes rub the feet. I always take along a set of masks, patches, peeling disks and serums. The arsenal of the skincare cosmetics occupies a large part of my luggage, but this is a necessity, and so far I have not found all the products in a convenient miniature format. A set of decorative cosmetics is more modest: there are eyebrow gel, corrector, several shades of lipstick and the foundation by Les Beiges Chanel in my cosmetic bag. I always bring fitness elastic bands in order not to let myself go at all.

How do you plan your outfits for Fashion Week? Do you change outfits between the shows?

I collect my looks depending on the duration of my stay and try to compose them in such a way as to combine them. I also try to choose accessories that match almost everything or do not take much space in the luggage. You need to be extremely careful with the handbags in order not to deform them — so there is no opportunity to take along some of them.

What are your three main criteria for choosing a suitcase?

The main thing is that it must keep the shape well, and of course, be roomy!

Do you have any suitcase packing life hacks? Maybe you pack your belongings in a certain way in order not to mess clothing or not to damage shoes?

Probably, everyone has his/her methods — I formed mine through trial and error. First, I put dresses, blouses, skirts made of light flowing fabrics, straightening them on the shoulders.

Next, I can put a jacket turned inside out, carefully wrapping the shoulders. Shoes should be carried in the cloth bags and two pairs should never be put together. I put the collected look for the first day and the basic option of my cosmetic bag in the hand luggage, in case my suitcase is lost.

In the last few years there is a trend for things customization. How do you feel about this and is it a good idea to customize the suitcase?

I love everything calm, plain. My suitcase is not customized.

Should there be many suitcases, like bags, or is one enough?

There should be at least two suitcases, and further depending on the situation.

Tell us about your schedule at Fashion Week. How does your day begin and how long does it usually last?

My day begins with a wonderful, unhurried breakfast in a cozy Parisian cafe. Then I spend a busy day with many meetings in our showroom.

What are your must-haves for traveling?

The list of essentials is quite extensive. Regarding the wardrobe, these are the sneakers that I combine with flying dresses, a jacket and a short coat.

Favorite glasses are usually the ones that I bought the last. Ankle boots or coarse flat shoes. I bring along a pair of T-shirts, a white shirt and jeans. My beauty arsenal is a hairdryer to do styling, a comb and Sisley hair products, especially I am delighted with the oil. As a rule, I use Payot masks only on trips; at home I prefer visiting a beautician.

Faith magic eye cream is the favorite in my cosmetics bag — it nourishes perfectly, restores, and makes the look fresh. It is convenient that it can also be used for lip contour.

I also take along a head massager in case I need to relax (I miss my husband). And a book for sure! I don’t have enough time to read tho, but... you never know.

How do you plan your outfits for Fashion Week? Do you change outfits between the shows?

As a rule, during the Paris Fashion Week, I wear clothing from my latest collections. Since, first of all, for me this is a business trip and during this period I have a lot of meetings, I rarely get to shows. Nevertheless, I can change the outfit during the day.

How many outfits and pairs of shoes do you get in total? Does everything fit in one suitcase?

About 4 pairs: sneakers, a pair of flat-soled or rough boots, an elegant variant for an evening event and an additional pair that is fashionable this season.

What are your three main criteria for choosing a suitcase?

Light-weight! This is the most important. Lasting. Big.

Do you have any suitcase packing life hacks? Maybe you pack your belongings in a certain way in order not to mess clothing or not to damage shoes?

I put things as if they are just from the store. For example, if this is a shirt, I fasten all the buttons. I use special bags for clothes and, contrary to popular belief, that things need to be packed as compactly as possible, I try to keep dresses, trousers and cardigans spacious. This helps to avoid creases, wrinkles.

Were there any funny cases with your luggage? What to do if you go to the Fashion Week and your suitcase with all the outfits get lost?

If your luggage is lost — relax. You can get a little upset for a minute, but then go buy a new beautiful dress, get makeup in Sephora and drink a glass of white wine.

In the last few years there is a trend for things customization. How do you feel about this and is it a good idea to customize the suitcase?

This is a good trend that will make it easy to distinguish your suitcase on the baggage conveyor belt.

Should there be many suitcases, like bags, or is one enough?

Three suitcases are enough for me: a small one, for hand luggage, and two large ones. If we are talking about family travel, then, of course, you need more suitcases.

Suitcase of the buyer of Kyiv boutique Chloe Tatyana Ruban

When the shows are over, buyers from all over the world come to Paris to take a closer look at the collections and place orders for the next season. We asked Tanya Ruban about how her working day goes, what are her must haves on the trip and what are the main beauty products in her travel cosmetic bag.

Tell us about your schedule at Fashion Week. How does your day begin and how long does it usually last?

It depends on whether we attend the shows or just go to buying. This season, unfortunately, I don’t get to the Chloé show and go only to the re-see and buying. Because of this, the trip is greatly shortened — I fly to Paris for only 2 days. My day traditionally begins early and always with a run. Moreover, for me a run through morning Paris — is the nostalgia for my life in this city. My route lies along the Seine. Then I return to the hotel, take a shower, do some beauty treatments, and by 9 am go to the buying-session in Chloé, where I spend the whole day. Then, our company goes to lunch, which smoothly flows into the afternoon drink, and then we go for a walk around evening Paris or to dance.

If we could attend the show this year, then by all means I, as a buyer of the Kiev boutique, would wear some Chloé clothing. Visiting other shows, I would change the outfit, but would supplement it with accessories or shoes of this brand.

What are your must-haves for traveling?

When traveling, especially if I stay at the hotel, I take my favorite perfume for home — Monument Hotel. I have the same fragrance at home, and I spray it in a hotel room to create a more comfortable atmosphere. I bought this perfume in Barcelona.

I have sensitive skin, so I always take along my beauty products — masks and serum. I almost do not use decorative cosmetics, so I only take a liquid highlighter. As for the clothes — I never leave without sneakers and sportswear, as well as elastic bands for hair. If the trip is long, I can go to work out in the gym. And always take along a trench.

How do you plan your outfits for Fashion Week? Do you change outfits between the shows?

What is the most important before going to Paris is to free up some space in the suitcase. Because I always buy there anything. But since I have not visited the Fashion Week yet and miss the show this season, it’s difficult for me to answer, but if I visit the shows in the next season, I’m unlikely to change outfits between the shows completely, I’d prefer some kind of universal clothing such as a jacket and voluminous sunglasses. It is easy to change a jacket for something else, but I would not bother about it. Otherwise, I will need three suitcases. I am a practical person.

What are your three main criteria for choosing a suitcase?

I choose a suitcase:
а) by size — depending on how long the trip lasts and how many outfits I will need;
б) By its internal content. I really like keeping things in order — I need two large compartments, preferably a couple of pockets for some small things in the compartments themselves. It must be durable for sure — they are not treated carefully at the airports — I mean quality. It can be made of aluminum or plastic, with good wheels. They should be protected from above so that they do not fall off along.
And the third is, of course, color. I don’t like hand luggage of bright colors, so if talking about a small suitcase, then I prefer gray or black, some restrained colors. But for a large suitcase, for example, if I am flying to New York or Paris for a few days, then I choose a brighter color, because I like to find my suitcase on the baggage conveyor belt immediately without standing and reading the tags to find out if this is mine suitcase or not.

Do you have any suitcase packing life hacks? Maybe you pack your belongings in a certain way in order not to mess clothing or not to damage shoes?

I have a couple of life hacks. I always pack things by categories: for example, clothes — separately, cosmetics — separately, shoes — separately. I never mix these things. When I was in Japan, I bought amazing vacuum bags that come with such a very lightweight device that helps pump air out of these bags. You can put many things in them, just anything. Even t-shirts take up much less space in these bags. You can put a sweater there as well. If, for example, you have gathered a lot of things on a trip, this device will help to pump out air and save some space. They are very saving. They free up twice as much space in a suitcase.

I put all the shoes in the covers. I do like it when the packed suitcase looks nice and I know where each of the things is.

Were there any funny cases with your luggage? What to do if you go to Fashion Week and a suitcase with all the outfits get lost?

I had a lot of all kinds of stories with my luggage with all my endless flights in the past and now. I lost it, it was stolen with all the documents, I got it sometimes in 2 days, sometimes in a week after arrival. A while back at the times when I was engaged in the modeling business, I flew to Paris or Milan — and the suitcase (rather a cheap one) opened completely, apparently, when it was thrown, and all my belongings went out on the luggage belt one by one from boots to shorts. It was not a very pleasant story for sure, but I survived it.

If you fly to the Fashion Week and your suitcase is lost, I believe this is fate and a kind of a jackpot: you must change your entire wardrobe urgently and run to the nearest shopping street or the Lafayette Gallery and buy everything new and beautiful and not get upset by no means.
